Chilean Pomachiliini

The Family Elateridae in Chile

Elizabeth Arias-Bohart
Essig Museum of Entomology

The Elateridae is a natural group and its outer limits are well defined, in contrast, its subfamily and tribal arrangement are still in stage of flux. They are found in all vegetation types throughout the world. Currentl 9300 are described species in the world; In Chile they are about 120 species organized in 50 genera, but still in ugent needs of revisionary work.

The Elateridae are characterized by the unique click mechanism they possess. There are a few families, related to Elateridae, that have the same mechanism. The clicking mechanism: Elaterids can click due a special mechanism in which a spine on the prosternum can be snapped into a corresponding notch on the mesosternum, producing a violent “click” as a defensive mechanism avoid predation, although it is also useful when the beetle is on its back and needs to right itself.
